We also provide sporting opportunities for our students who have more complex needs. These include activities such as rebound therapy (using the trampolines), horse riding for both primary and secondary/FE departments (which aids with the physiotherapy of our students) and our PMLD class have recently started attending sessions at the Billingham Forum ice rink which allows them to go onto the ice in their wheel chairs and enjoy the sensory experience. Some of our Key stage 4 students have been attending a series of sailing lessons delivered by qualified sailing instructors at nearby Scaling Dam. Two groups (one from primary and one from FE) have been attending sessions at Gym World which is based at Middlesbrough College. The facilities there are excellent so the students are able to have a go on apparatus such as the beam, the high bar and the trampoline. Using this apparatus is a great experience and has not only improved skills such as balance and coordination but has also helped build the student’s self-confidence.
Most recently, all the classes from Kirkleatham Hall School participated in a 1 mile run/walk around our school field in aid of the Smiles Foundation. The money raised is going to help fund the building of a Day Centre for children with disabilities in Romania.
In 2014 we organised a football match to celebrate the World Cup, which involved students who were leaving against the rest of the school. We also hold regular matches against other local special school and groups
Another opportunity that we provide in school is the Community Sports Leaders Award. A group of key stage 4 students are studying for this award and are gaining valuable experience when helping with tournaments such as those mentioned above. The students have organised sporting activities for younger pupils in the school as well coaching them to do a particular skill. This award has helped improve the students organisation and communication skills as well as promoting the students confidence and self- esteem.
Sky Sports Living for Sport program
In March, a group of students from Kirkleatham Hall School were given the opportunity to take part in the Sky Sports Living for Sport program. This involved working with female boxing star Amanda Coulson who came into school and did a workshop on sport and how it can have such a positive impact on your life. The students completed various tasks around values such as determination, equality and fair play. They also got the opportunity to try on some of the boxing equipment used in the 2012 Olympics as well as try on some of the medals that Amanda has won throughout her career. To finish the session, Amanda told the students her story, in which she overcame several barriers to become Great Britain Champion in female boxing. We are planning to take part in the program again this year.
