To encourage pupils to listen carefully and talk extensively about what they see, hear or do. By the end of this phase pupils are expected to be able to listen attentively, to have enlarged their vocabulary and to speak with confidence. They will have started to gain the ability to differentiate between different phonemes (individual letter sounds) and will be able to hear these within familiar words. This phase is primarily taught through the use of alliteration, stories, songs and rhymes. Phase one carries on throughout the school as the skills learnt in this phase are invaluable and will continue to help the pupil’s progress through the different phases.
