Kirkleatham Hall School

"Unlocking Potential"

Forest School

Forest School offers a holistic approach to learning that is beneficial to all. Carried out in our enclosed woodland on site, this nature based learning experience promotes a child centred approach that provides many opportunities for play, exploration and discovery.

Running all year round Forest School gives children the chance to learn in all weathers and experience first-hand the changes each season brings to our surrounding environment.

The session is delivered by a trained forest leader and provides opportunities for both child-led and adult-led activities, catering a variety of learning styles. Children have the chance to develop a range of skills including communication, social and physical skills. Some examples of the activities we carry out include:

  • Sensory walks
  • Shelter building
  • Campfire cooking
  • Mini beast hunts
  • Nature art and crafts
  • Puddle splashing
  • Mud kitchen
  • Attention Autism (out in forest school)
  • Sensory messy play
  • Sensory Stories

The response from our children so far has been unbelievable. It is evidently a highly enjoyable experience and children have really come in to their own when given the opportunity to explore, take safe risks and make their own choices in the outdoor setting. We are seeing confidence and curiosity grow and levels of alertness and engagement flourish.
