  • National Tree Week

Wed 29 Nov 2017 Lee Rudd

Pupils from Kirkleatham Hall School marked National Tree Week by planting Ash and Horse Chestnut trees in Guisborough Forest & Walkway on Tuesday 28th November.

National Tree Week is the UK's largest tree celebration launching the start of the winter tree planting season, and takes place from 25 November to 3 December.

A dozen children took part from Years 5 and 6 and at least 12 trees were planted in the country park.

Councillor Alec Brown, cabinet member for neighbourhoods at Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, said: "Planting new trees and preserving old ones not only protects our environment, but maintains the beauty of our countryside. I would like to thank all the children at Kirkleatham Hall School who took part, they did a great job!

“I would also like to thank volunteers from all over the borough who continue to dedicate their time and efforts into making our borough a beautiful place to live and visit.”

Chris Homer said: “this was an excellent opportunity for our children to visit the Guisborough Forest & Walkway and be involved in this national initiative. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and working with staff from the country park, despite the cold weather and muddy conditions!”

Over the course of the week, 2000 trees have already been planted at Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park, as well as two apple trees in Liverton Village.

In Marske Valley Gardens, Countryside Rangers supported the Marske in Bloom group who conducted a planting session and also led a Tree I.D. and seed collecting walk with Saltburn Academy in partnership with Saltburn Forest Schools.

If you would like to get involved in other countryside activities, sign up to be a Countryside Volunteer. Contact Karen Preston on 01642 496428 or email volunteering@redcar-cleveland.gov.uk for more information.

  • British Steel Industrial Cadets - 2017

Mon 20 Nov 2017 George Dunning

Industrial Cadets work with UK employers to create a talent pipeline and a future skilled workforce, whilst helping young people to develop the skills they need to enter the workplace with confidence.

During the autumn term Charlie, Matthew and Natasha from Rosedale class were chosen to take part in this year’s Bronze award cadetship with British Steel. They joined forces with other local area schools and over a three weeks period spent time visiting British Steels Beam Mill, Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge and TTE industrial apprenticeship collage. They took part in activities designed to build team work and understanding of how large industries work. All three enjoyed their experience and also making new friends while working in mixed teams from participating schools.
