  • Epilepsy Awareness Day - 26th March

Tue 26 Mar 2019 Karen Robson

    Dear Parents and Carers

Purple day is the international day for epilepsy and falls on the 26 March each year. On this day, people across the globe come together to raise awareness of the condition and make a difference to the lives of people affected by epilepsy.  The event was created in 2008 by Cassidy Megan, a young girl from Canada, who has epilepsy and wanted to find a way to get people talking about the condition. As well as raising awareness, another focus of the day is to assure those with epilepsy that they are not alone.

So, we need your help to mark this day, to raise awareness of the condition and encourage everyone at our school (pupils and staff) to dress up in something purple on Tuesday 26th March.

Please note that we do not require any donation to take part in this day.

Thank you for your continued support.

  • OPAL

Fri 15 Mar 2019 Paul McLean

Well what an exciting two weeks we have had in school with OPAL (Outdoor play and learning). Playtimes have never looked so exciting. We have had spinners, a construction area, den building, window washing, cardboard box towers, dressing up boxes, creative arts area and a giant tug of war. The children have never had so much fun at playtimes. We have extended our play to 30 minutes instead of the 15 we had previously and we are very much seeing play as an opportunity to learn creatively, developing imagination, to develop social skills such as sharing and taking turns, to be able to manage risk and to develop communication and friendships.

Our next steps are to develop areas much more, to provide greater play opportunities and to do this across the whole school, including FE and EYFS. We are also looking at our dinnertimes and are hoping to offer a similar experience at those times. We are reflecting on how we will be able to facilitate this in the next academic year.

In the meantime, we will continue to keep you updated on OPAL developments and if you have any old toys, sheets, bric-a brac etc. that you do not want then please send them into school as they may be put to good use in our play.

  • Girl Guides - Making Pottery

Thu 14 Mar 2019 Tracey Appleby

On Thursday 12th March, we were lucky enough to have Claude Frere-Smith visit Guides to come and show us how to work with clay. We had a brilliant time. First, we made a pinch pot out of a ball of clay. It was quite tricky to hold the ball of clay and move it round to make the pot. The clay felt cold but nice at the same time.

Next we made two more pinch pots, Claude showed us how to put the two pots together. We used a toothbrush dipped in water to brush the edges of the two pots, that helps the clay to stick together. Next we put our finger inside the pot and smoothed the edges on the outside of the pots so that they held together. It took lots of concentration. Next we made a sausage shape out of clay, we pushed a paintbrush through the middle of the sausage shape and rolled it to the make the hole in the middle bigger. This turned out to be the stem of a vessel that we made. We used the skills that we had learned to help the different parts stick together and smoothed the edges again. After this we decorated the vessels. We are very proud of our hard work and we hope that the parents like them too.

Thank you very much to Claude for coming in to work with us.

  • Career Event at Middlesbrough FC

Wed 13 Mar 2019 George Dunning

Students from FE and Ryedale class spent the morning at the Riverside Stadium. They attending a careers event to encourage students to think about working for the football club once they have left school or college. After a short presentation and refreshments they were given an exclusive tour of the stadium from the players changing rooms to the chairman’s boardroom. The staff a Middlesbrough FC were fantastic and welcoming. Staff and students thought it was a brilliant event and came away with a better understanding of how many people it takes to run a football club.

  • 3 Students helping others out of school

Mon 11 Mar 2019 Karen Robson
Three learners have been busy helping others in their own time out of school.

Maisie, Sadie and Elisha have all been spending time at 25K Youth Club organising and raising funds for Wards 21 and 22 at James Cook Hospital. They raised enough funds to be able to donate some extra treats for children on the ward over the Christmas period. After purchasing the gifts they took them up onto the ward themselves and shared them between the patients.

This was a fantastic gesture showing how thoughtful and caring they are!

In response they have earned themselves these fantastic certificates which recognises all of their lovely qualities as well as all of the hard work and effort that they put into making sure that other children are cared about too.
